"The Fragrant Harbor," where East meets West, the Pearl of the Orient - China's Special Administrative Region has a rich history, an intriguing modern posture, and occupies a unique position in the Asian landscape. Hong Kong is home to a booming movie industry, cosmopolitan shopping districts, an iconic skyline, and is one of the most densely populated areas in the world.

Like an Asian version of New York City, Hong Kong is a city that never sleeps, and while all the hustle and bustle may seem overwhelming to travelers, Hong Kong consistently ranks in the top 5 best public transportation systems in the world. Consider this: over 90% of Hong Kong travel is done by mass transit every day, over 7 million people.

The MTR, or Mass Transit Railway, is Hong Kong's system of trains and light rails - a network of 10 lines that stretch from the border crossings with China to almost every corner of Hong Kong's territories - including Hong Kong Disney, Hong Kong Island, and Hong Kong International Airport.

To make the most of Hong Kong's highly efficient MTR system, there are really only two steps:
  1. Get an Octopus Card - This stored-value smart card is more than just a "bus card," it can be used in a variety of locations such as supermarkets, vending machines, restaurants, and is even used in Hong Kong schools to record attendance! An Adult card can be purchased for HK$150 and has an initial value of HK$100 (US$13), and a Child card (ages 3-11) is HK$70 and carries an initial value of HK$20 (US$2.60). Value can be added at many places around the city. [Note: Hong Kong dollars can also be used as fare for public transportation on most mass transit options]
  2. Familiarize yourself with the MTR route maps so that you can move seamlessly across the territory. The MTR website has mobile apps (for iPhone, iPad, and Android), which can help with direction on-the-fly, and a Journey Planner page if you want to map out your trip in advance, plus, the map below shows all 10 MTR lines and most stops.
